Beta 10 Released
aphera.co · 2026-04-14
Beta 10 is another huge update — over two weeks of intense work from the three of us that lays down a solid foundation for the app that we can grow into and improve. It’s feeling like home. Unified UI The three spaces you know today have been simplified. Grid for reviewing and acting on images in quantity, Quick for flowing through a selection or subset of images with your editing workflows (Balance + Looks), and Detail for going deeper into a single image to develop it further. These ideas and modes of operating felt analogous to these distinct spaces, but as we used it more and heard from you, we realized we needed to bring things closer together. Why weren’t Looks and Balance in Grid? The keyboard controls worked, but why were those controls only visible in Quick? Keeping these spaces distinct felt more like work than flow, so we unified Grid and Quick. Balance and Look tools (we call them internally, chiclets) are now present in Grid, which we consider the default view. Working through an image is now much more seamless — size up your grid, filter starred selections, or select batches of images. And now, double-click an image to bring it to a singular isolated view and work on it in context of your project’s groups, starred, and workflows. Detail is still where the work happens, and we now call it Develop. Duh! An obvious name for when you want to further work on an image with effects or develop your Looks. No major changes here (but a Develop V2 is on the roadmap). You can now access Develop by hitting Enter/Return (or the big button on the bottom right). Esc to exit back to Grid, or hit Enter again to isolate the image in Grid. The toolbar provides navigation between Grid, Develop, and Crop, while displaying real-time project status. There’s one other way to get to Develop, which is the other new addition: the top toolbar. It’s both navigation and an informational readout. You can access Grid, Develop, and Crop from here on the left. The right side shows you the status of your project. It’ll show you the images and selection ranges, Export, and Import status. Click to toggle through each state, and the disclosure caret will give you live updates if any combination of the three are active. Lightbox We’ve added a Lightbox view, the L key toggles it. Lightbox is a very fast way to isolate an image in full-screen with no UI and just metadata. All the keyboard tools work here, so think of this as a better version of Quick + Focus. If you have a second display, you can place the Lightbox there as a large reference while accessing the rest of the project. More UI changes We changed the delete key slightly. In beta 9 pressing delete would always set the image to Rejected. In practice we found this to be unexpected when inside a Group or Workflow. Now, delete will remove an image from its Group or Workflow when in those views. The heavier operation of Reject is now option-delete and works in all contexts. The Balance tools now correctly return to “no change” when you increase by several steps and then decrease by an equal number of steps. Previously the value would be effectively zero but still show a “modified” state in the UI. The Balance tool also gained a right click (context menu) allowing you to Reset each control. The Crop tool now has an orientation button for correcting the overall rotation of an image. Changes to image rendering We made two changes to the Grain tool: the default value for “Blend > Overall” which controls the visible effect of the grain is now lower. We think this is a better starting place when adding grain on most images. Note that any grain settings in existing projects will be honored but you might wish to explore the more subtle behavior of the “Blend > Overall” slider. We also modified the grain itself, in subtle ways that you may or may not notice. The performance of Denoise is improved; previously using this tool could slow down the overall image rendering speed and cause the UI to feel slow. Lens Corrections have been upgraded; your cameras should be identified more correctly now. Disk, memory, and performance Upon import, Aphera creates several proxy images to avoid the time-consuming process of decoding and debayering a RAW file. We now require fewer of these images over time as you edit, saving disk space. Additionally, we put a limit on the total size of this proxy cache, currently 10GB (tools to change that or clean it up will be coming). When those proxy files are missing, Aphera now more efficiently creates them as needed. Previously this regeneration step could cause the app to slow and consume too much memory. Several other fixes have been put in place to keep memory usage under control; we generally see it stabilize around 6GB once an import has completed. The UI layer which displays images on screen has been revamped to reduce memory usage and be much more efficient. It should feel noticeably snappier when moving moving between images. Rapid movement such as holding down the right arrow key shows a significant improvement.

Beta 13 Released
aphera.co · 2026-05-14
A new beta version has been released. Heads up: First-launch migration Aphera now runs outside the macOS sandbox, which means the app’s internal data moves from ~/Library/Containers/… to standard locations inside ~/Library/…. On first launch, Beta 13 migrates your existing data to the new locations. It takes just a moment, and your projects and settings should be unaffected. Please contact us (hello@aphera.co) if you see anything out of the ordinary. Projects window The Projects window has been expanded and fixed to accurately show everything in your configured projects folder. Open existing projects, create new ones, and see each project’s cover image at a glance. Sort projects by name or last opened. Project Cover Image Each project now has a cover image used in the Projects window and in QuickLook previews. Right-click any photo in a project and choose Use as Cover Image to set it. By default, the cover is the highest rated, oldest photo. QuickLook for projects Aphera project packages now preview in Finder via QuickLook. Select a project file and press Space to see its cover image without opening the app. Look shortcuts toggle Keys 6 through 0 now toggle the assigned Look. Press the key once to apply, press again to remove. Previously these keys only applied the Look. Toggle Rejected Option+Delete now toggles the rejected flag on the selection. Press once to reject, press again to clear back to unrated. When the selection is mixed, all selected photos are set to rejected. Other changes Drop images on the Dock icon while a project is open to import directly into that project. Clicking the dock icon when no windows are open shows the Projects window Fixed some rough edges in macOS full screen and Lightbox

Beta 14 Released
aphera.co · 2026-06-02
What’s new in this release: Perspective The crop editor now carries a tool switcher along the bottom — Aspect Ratio, Straighten, and Perspective tools. Edits apply directly and save as you go; reset each one independently from the right-click menu, or undo. Perspective can be corrected using guided drawing modes. Drag the guides onto lines that should be straight, then click Apply Perspective and Aphera works out the correction: Vertical — two guides for converging verticals, like a building shot from below. Horizontal — two guides for converging horizontals. Full — four corner handles placed on something that should be a rectangle. Prefer to dial it in by hand? Manual mode swaps the guides for sliders — Vertical and Horizontal lens shift, Shear, and Aspect. Auto Crop keeps the frame filled as the image warps. Straighten is now its own guided tool too: drag the guide onto something that should be level (horizontal or vertical) — a horizon, a doorframe — and click Apply Straighten. Relink moved files Move or rename your photos in Finder and Aphera follows them automatically (via macOS bookmarks). When a file can’t be found, it’s flagged as Missing in the project status — distinct from a file that’s on a disconnected drive (Reconnect). Manage Imports lists every import with its current status. When files go missing, open it, choose Locate on Disk… for that import, and point Aphera at the folder they moved to; it reconnects them in place. Relinking only updates references — it never moves or copies your files. Send Feedback Help > Send Feedback… opens an email straight to us. Tell us what’s working and what isn’t. Other changes Importing automatically skips files that are already in the project. Fixed issues in Develop where the edits would get stuck or suddenly jump back to a previous state. Fixed importing sometimes scrolled to the bottom-most image instead of pinning to the top. Fixed ‘picker’ UI elements on Tahoe. App binary reduced from ~100MB to ~80MB.

Aphera 1.2 Released
aphera.co · 2026-07-30
Aphera 1.2 is a solid quality-of-life update, especially if you’re outside of the US and love keyboard shortcuts. Move to Trash Culling often ends with getting rid of the outtakes. Cmd+Shift+Delete now removes the selected photos from the project and moves their files to the Trash. If you change your mind, Cmd+Z puts the photos back and returns their files from the Trash. Remove from Project is now undoable as well. See Browsing. Camera Support We’ve added and improved a few cameras, and published a full list of Cameras Aphera Supports. Added Canon EOS R50 V Added Sony A7R VI All compression modes for Sony A7 V and Sony A7R VI are now supported Shortcuts follow your keyboard Shortcuts are bound to where a key sits on the keyboard, not to the character it produces. The Balance controls form a cluster of keys that a US keyboard and a German keyboard order differently. Now, the keys are in the same physical place on every keyboard layout, and labels throughout the app match the characters on your actual keys. Crop, Lightbox, Before Edits, and the bracket, minus, and no-stars keys are also defined positionally to keep the ergonomics we intended. Keyboard settings Settings gains a Keyboard pane for the two shortcuts that are a matter of taste. Assign number keys divides the number row between star ratings and looks: Option Stars No Stars Looks Base Look Stars 1-5 0 Cmd 1-9 Cmd 0 Looks Cmd 1-5 Cmd 0 1-9 0 Both 1-5 ` (left of 1) 6-0 - (right of 0) The Stars and Looks options give you nine keyboard-assignable looks, versus five when using Both. Repeated Assignment decides what pressing the key for a value a photo already has should do: keep the value, or clear it back to No Stars or the Base Look. Ratings and looks are set separately. New installations start on Stars, which is what the manual documents. Installations prior to 1.2 keep Both and the repeated-press behavior they had, so nothing moves under you. See Keyboard Settings. Rename and trash projects Right-click a project in the Projects window to Rename Project… or Move Project to Trash. See Projects. Color Temperature presets The Balance layer on RAW photos gains a Balance Presets menu: As Shot, Daylight, Cloudy, Shade, Tungsten, Fluorescent, and Flash. Each sets Temperature and Tint and leaves your other adjustments alone. See Balance. View Before Edits Holding \ to see the photo before your edits is now discoverable as View > Before Edits. The menu item leaves it on until you switch it off. A status readout on the toolbar shows when it’s active. Other changes Zoom shortcuts now line up with each other: Cmd+Shift+Minus fits the window, Cmd+Shift+Plus is 1:1 Pixels, and Cmd+Shift+0 fills the window. No more Cmd+Option+Shift+Plus. The unstarred filter moved to Cmd+Option+0, matching the 0 that clears a rating. Save Look now reads New Look…, with a clearer dialog for naming. The Balance panel in Develop is now ordered the same as in Grid, following the broad-to-narrow order of the tools. Return now works as expected for the default button in alerts. Aphera 1.2.1 Fixed a rare crash that could happen when closing a project window

Shoot RAW + JPG, and tune Aphera to your Mac. RAW + JPG pairs If your camera writes a RAW and a JPG for every frame, Aphera used to import the RAW and skip the JPG. Now it imports both and treats them as one photo with two source files: the RAW, and the SOOC — your camera’s own rendering. It stays one photo, with one rating and one slot in the grid. Switch which file it uses from Photo > Source File, from the photo’s context menu, or by clicking the file name in the metadata under a thumbnail. Each file keeps its own adjustments, so switching back returns to the edits you made there. Trashing a photo takes all of its files. See Importing and Source File. Performance Settings has a new Performance pane, with sliders ranged to your hardware. Processing — how many images Aphera may decode at once. Faster imports, at the cost of memory while the work runs. In-Memory Cache — RAM held for image previews. On-Disk Cache — space for RAW proxy files. Importing is now up to 25% faster. Here is a comparison of importing 100 photos on an M2 Max MacBook Pro with 64GB: Aphera Version Processing 24MP DNG 100MP RAF 1.2.1 – 0:19 1:32 1.3.0 Default: 8 0:15 1:08 1.3.0 Raised: 12 0:13 1:06 1.3.0 Lowered: 4 0:20 1:30 A Statistics section reports active memory and the maximum reached this launch, so you can size the sliders by watching what they actually cost. Reset to Defaults goes back to the values Aphera picks for your Mac. See Performance. Anamorphic desqueeze Manual Perspective in Crop mode now uses Aphera’s custom sliders, and the Aspect control has a text field and a menu of common anamorphic factors, 1.25 through 2.00. Type an exact factor or pick one. See Crop & Perspective. Other changes Export quality for JPG and HEIC now goes down to 60%, from 80%. Files on external drives are matched by location rather than volume name, fixing photos reported as offline when the drive name contained an unusual character. Undo now works correctly in all open project windows. Toasts appear in the window that caused them.

We’re always listening and learning from user feedback. Histogram was a widely requested feature, now implemented in the app, in addition to Waveform and Color Scopes. Scopes Three scopes now sit at the top of the Inspector: Histogram, Waveform, and Color. They read the photo with your edits applied, and update in realtime. Histogram — how many pixels hold each brightness value, per channel. A spike against either edge is clipping. Waveform — the same reading laid out across the width of the frame, so you can see where in the image each value lives. Color — hue and saturation with brightness removed. Understand color intensity and hue shifts over the entire image. Scopes measure the full image at a fixed resolution, unaffected by pan and and zoom. Histogram bars scale against a fixed reference so that the graph stays consistent across photos. See Scopes. Redesigned inspector panel We‘ve redesigned the right side panel in View mode, bringing it in line with other photo apps. Scopes sit at the top, with Balance and Looks below. The most important tools are more present in your view. Export moves to the bottom, out of the way until you need it. 30-day trial The trial is now 30 days (up from 14) and we‘ve extended all existing trials. Enjoy some extra time to explore Aphera! Other changes The Develop panel headers are renamed. The header is Image Pipeline, replacing the file name, and the layer stack below it reads Effects Layers.

November, 2021 # You’re reading the twelfth Duet monthly update. During past months, we’ve been implementing a new upload component, fixing bugs and spending time understanding the future requirements of various teams. Also, our team has recently added one new member. We've added a new team member working as a frontend developer! Who will really help us get to the bottom of our backlog - we're still aiming to add one or two more members to the team. Adding new team members is always exciting as it gives us an opportunity to get thoughtful review on our internal documentation and give suggestions for improvements. The team has changed a lot this year but we wish to pick up the speed and progress on things that have been left undone. We are excited to continue work on Duet Design System and this might possibly be the start of its next phase. New this update # In this section we’ll highlight new features and progress from Duet Design System. This update’s highlights include: Upload component in progress # Most of the new component work has been done for the new Upload component which we plan to release in the near future. Its one of the more complex components we have worked on and requires quite a lot of tuning to get right. Filed bugs # Our work on Duet Design System isn't just about the system itself but we also actively test the platforms the system is used on. Sometimes there are issues in these platforms which we can't fix ourselves and need to file bug reports for the systems in question. Lately we have filed two critical bugs for Webkit/Safari with Webkit and Apple regarding their accessibility problems in current versions. https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=230824 Safari reads everything in form elements twice With Apple FB9660508 major accessibility flaws in recent Safari release (when used with VoiceOver) We will be following these issues and try to get the groups in charge to fix them. Toughening the architecture # To make Duet more self-reliant, and remove its dependencies on any specific framework we've started moving many of the previously "built-in" and sligthly magical framework bindings away from Stencil and into their own seperate runners. This means that we are no longer relying on Stencil's built-in development server, or its built in Jest testing framework to complete our various tests. There is still a bit to go before we're completely self-reliant, but once that happens we are quite well prepared to potentially move to any other framework without breaking changes. Documentation updates # We've made significant changes to different pages in the documentation. We have removed some obsolete content from the documentation and raised the visibility of the most relevant things. We will keep on working with this to make the documentation even better and possible also add new functionalities. Updated various sections in Brand guidelines Moved iconography to top level menu Removed some of the old pages that were not as relevant anymore What is Duet? # Duet is a collection of reusable components and tools, guided by clear standards, that can be assembled together to build digital products for LocalTapiola and Turva. The goal of Duet is to improve user interface consistency and quality, while making our software design and development processes more efficient. The name “Duet” resembles the fact that there are two separate themes. One for LocalTapiola and one for Turva. June, 2021 # You’re reading the eleventh Duet monthly update. During past months, we’ve been busy improving accessibility and supporting a new beta website for vehicles on lahitapiola.fi. Also, our team has recently added two new members. The monthly updates have gotten more and more sporadic and from now on we are hoping to bring more regular quarterly updates instead. Now, we have some additional changes in the Duet team. As briefly covered in our previous update, Viljami, Duet’s Lead Architect, is now fully committing to his new role at Nordhealth. Nick, Duet’s Lead Developer, is also moving on to new endeavours. It goes without saying that both gentlemen have been instrumental in the founding and success of Duet and we are thankful for all the hard work they have put in over these two and half years. While we’re sad to say goodbye (for now), we’re always excited to offer a warm welcome to new members. The great Dane Klaus Hougesen has joined the Duet team in May as our new Lead Developer and Frontend Architect and has taken on the technical and administrative responsibilities of Duet. Furthermore, Luka Haapa has joined LähiTapiola as Accessibility Specialist and has started working alongside Avaava, our consulting partner in accessibility. New this month # In this section we’ll highlight every month new features and progress from Duet Design System. This month’s highlights include: Improvements to Design Tokens # We’ve improved our design token documentation to include useful contrast comparisons and also allowing you to click to copy a token name. View documentation Guidance on data formats # Duet Design System now includes guidelines for commonly presented data to keep services more consistent. View documentation Fieldset component # Fieldset component is used to group together several related form components and a label. The usage of this component helps to make these groups accessible for assistive technologies. View example Duet CLI 1.5.0 # The new Duet CLI makes it easier than ever to create quick prototypes and applications that utilize Design Tokens, Fonts, CSS Framework and Web Components from Duet.
